DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT: AREWA

I am glad that  there are more and more African designers in Canada. Moréniké ( Designer of Aręwà ) expresses her flair for inspired clothing under the Aręwà label. Her vision for Aręwà is to elegantly dress the young, globally conscious woman in an effortless fusion of current obsessions and eccentric Yoruba flamboyance. Aręwà clothing is not just inspired by different cultures, but also an exotic expression of unique experiences, timelessness, genuine individuality and adventure. Aręwà is truly about marching to the beat of your own beautiful well-orchestrated drum! Aręwà is about novelty and selectively choosing individual fashion trends, often ignoring key looks that everyone else has latched onto. It is about dressing unconventionally, delighting in standing out of the crowd and always finding creative ways to style beautiful clothing ensemble

Lookbook: J Label by Jewel by Lisa

According to the label "The J Label was birthed out of Jewel by Lisa’s endless love affair with fashion. A desire to create a completely new and unique brand for the youthful fashion conscious, every day girl, a true dictator of style, with an unbreakable loyalty to the Jewel by Lisa brand. The J Label is a strong combination of urban cool, afro-pop, and cutting edge beautifully crafted clothes --- it is affordable luxury at its best. The pieces are high-fashion-completely-relevant to youthlife; hand embellished treasures, to be admired, hung nicely in wardrobes the world over, then asily incorporated with other everyday pieces. The J Label remains about quality, craftsmanship, detail, comfort, and most essential considerable affordability. The J Label is not an option, it is always THE option."
Jewel by Lisa is undeniably one the best luxury African designers in the industry right now .The collection has everything from Blazers, dresses, shirts, pants, shorts,to bags.

INTERVIEW WITH NIGERIAN DESIGNER CHINEDU UKABAM

I was recently invited to the presentation of the new collection of chinedesign but unfortunately I could not make it , but the designer Chinedu was kind enough to grant Ciaafrique an interview. check it out

Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Chinedu Ukabam. I am Nigerian-Canadian designer from Toronto and the name of my label is Chinedesign.

How did you get into designing and when did you start Chinedesign?
I used to record and perform music around Toronto as Eye + Eye. I designed some t-shirts for my crew to wear while promoting my "Love.Life.Music". People get asking us when the shirt would be for sale so I started producing them. When I got bored of just doing only graphic t's, I started learning how to design other garments. That in a nutshell is the story of Chinedesign.

AFRICAN FASHION DESIGNER : Introducing O'mak designs

Uche Ibezue is the name behind the label O'mak designs. O'mak Designs is a ready to wear line of clothing created to express a bold, confident and graceful style found in its every detail & style.

Ciaafrique fashionista of the Week : Bee AkA Chic Therapy

Name: Bee aka Chic Therapy
Country: USA
What is your style: I don’t think I have one style; I really am all over the place. My inspiration mostly comes from color and I wear them really bright. I also love loud and bold prints and so I wear tons of African print. Right now, I love silks and chiffon and I am dying to add some great pieces to my closet. As much as I like getting dolled up, I think comfort is key (minus heels-lol), and so I am into the whole blazer/leggings look.
Something you will never wear: Sunglasses, they look horrid on me.
Favorite Designers: Not that I own any of their pieces, but I love Rachel Roy (loves the understated elegance of her pieces), Lanre Da Silva (she’s been a favorite of mine for a long time), Betsey Johnson (her pieces are so fun and girly), Dianne Von Frustenberg, Marc Jacobs & Ituen Basi
Heels or flatsThat’s a tough one. It really depends on the occasion.  I recently vowed to stop buying high heels. I however, still love them; most of my heels are about 4- 6 inches. I also love my flats and I think I own all colors you can possibly think of.

When you live in the most populous country in Africa , its  hard to be a recognizable brand unless you have the talent to show for it.Being a great designer is not only about  sewing clothes, but know how to  style them ,market them , have a target market and so on .A person left a comment on this blog one day asking me "how come half of designers you present on this site are Nigerian?" I responded"

Lookbook : House of Makeda, Fela inspired Ogeyinka 2011 collection

Click here to see the rest of the House of Makeda collection

Ogeyinka 2011, meaning surrounded by beauty and style in Yoruba, is the new collection from the House of Makeda, the iconic afrocentric design house by jazz singer Teni. House of Makeda was established two years ago in Lagos, Nigeria and is truly unique in African fashion, with a warm, earthy 2600 square foot flagship space in Lagos, where artistic director Teni also performs with her ten piece band the Afro-Renaissance.

Lookbook: Washington Roberts SS11 Collection

The Washington Roberts Spring Summer 2011 Collection probes the scientific realm of Avatar (2009, James Cameron,) with its angular shapes and seaming.
“Geometry” calls to the makeup and costuming of the film with the manipulation of fabrics, cut outs, and experimentation with different textures. This collection is the epitome of edge, sophistication, femininity, and elegance. This collection is iconic Washington Roberts.
The defining image on the designer’s namesake sight, the “Navi” blazer, pairs Organza with novelty Tweed Fabric, for the ultimate relationship of sex and business. A provocative hint of skin is presented throughout the collection through the use of Chiffon, Organza, and Lace. Such looks as the “Eywa,”plays on this season’s mix-mash trend - pairing bold colors and patterns- with a slight twist of skin. Overall the collection presents equal parts business and pleasure, each piece easily translates from work to play. If nothing else, Washington Robert’s definitely knows how to accentuate the female physique with fun, modern, and bold pieces.
Washington Roberts Spring Summer collection brings certain sophistication with its presumed elegance and hint of modernization. WR is created for the woman who desires to look feminine yet strong, confident and impeccably stylish.
