APRIL2ND is a fashion label specializing in ready-to-wear and bespoke collection. The line was founded by Nigerian designer Ty, who has been a personal shopper since high school. Ty studied fashion design at Kingston University, and also attended fashion courses at Fashion and Textile Museum.The first collection was launched in September 2012 during London Fashion Week at Fashions Finest. APRIL2ND vision is to create clothes that are both luxurious and wearable, with a feminine but uncomplicated beauty about them. Congolese born, London based Womenswear designer Tina Lodondi just released her new Spring/summer collection. Tina designs are very classic and chic. The collection has everything from blazers, to dresses, skirts and shirts so we can all definitely find something we like. Honestly I am still having a hard time choosing my fave piece. I reached out to Tina to find out what was the inspiration behind this beautiful collection here is what she has to say:

"I wanted to create a look for the new generation of girls and women who wants to embrace the African prints. It is chic and feminine, with girls cuts. I observed what the girls wore in the Chelsea area of London and I thought they were missing some colours...I really wanted this collection to follow on the last one and to create a brand identity." Koshie O. is a brand of clothing which integrates African themes and aesthetics with modern designs. The fashion line blends an African focus on luxuriant fabric and earthy symbolism with more fluid and practical modern designs required by a contemporary lifestyle. In some sense, Koshie O. is an echo of many of the globalizing currents that are simultaneously shaping Africa and introducing her kaleidoscope to the modern world. The founder and CEO Nina Baksmaty is herself an embodiment of these transformations. She lives and was educated in the United States but was raised in Ghana along a line of traditional Ghanaian dressmakers and artisans who have served their local communities for several generations. They use top quality fabrics which are globally selected to exacting standards and processed in many places including Ghana and New York city.  

INSPIRATION 

How did you start in the Music industry ?
Growing up I saw the power of music at work among my family members and within my South African community. The elders would play music night and day and I observed what it could do to a people, but did not understand how. There were songs of struggle that seemed to give words to what people were feeling but could not articulate. It seemed to comfort those who could not express their pain. It seemed to give people an escape from their undesired reality. I was intrigued by this and wanted to be able to do the same - - make people feel that they could express their emotions when my music played. By the age of 18 I had my first demo.

Starting off I was signed to be the new face of R&B and Soul in a Kwaito label. I put out my first album All My Love in 2003. In 2006, I signed with Sony Africa to re-launch myself and further grow into the industry - I went on to release albums like Soul in Mind, Feel Good, Return to Love and Rise Again.

"It’s Archel as a clothing collection began a few years ago when Archel Bernard returned from her hometown of Monrovia, Liberia with about 30 dresses to sell to her friends in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The dresses completely sold out because Africans and African Americans in the States were all excited to have a piece of fashion from West Africa. Now Archel develops more and more ready to wear styles to sell in Liberia and in the United States. Each piece is simple, fun, affordable, and one of a kind. No one will ever have the exact same dress in the exact same cloth, similar to a true tailoring experience in Liberia. The best thing about the shop is that each piece is handmade by a Liberian woman, which means each purchase helps lift a girl your age from the ashes of war through her work. Now, everyone with any budget can have a piece of contemporary West African fashion."

The collection stays true to Editalo’s style making use of high waistlines and full skirts incorporating traditional fabrics with modern-day silhouettes. The first 2 dresses above are definitely my favorite. 

I first saw the collection of Tanzanian designer Evelyn Rugemalira during the Swahili fashion week. I was delighted to receive her latest collection a few days by a fellow blogger. According to the Swahili Fashion Week website Evelyn was an operations manager for a family-owned business is Dar Es Salaam when she opened a clothing fashion label called Eve Collections after an inspiring trip to Nigeria.
