Designer Spotlight: JINAKI

Jupe en pagne-africain-African print skirt by Jinaki via ciaafrique.com

According to their website Sharufa Rashied-Walker is the creator/designer behind JINAKI.She has always had an indelible love for fashion and the arts. Watching her mother create clothing planted the seed at a young age. Sharufa made her own alterations to her garments and began styling herself in grade school. Her creativity continued to flourish while attending the School of Arts and Science at Howard University, where she explored fashion design and began to hand sew pieces to her wardrobe. JINAKI was created while Sharufa was living in Nice, France. While there, she studied at the Singer Institute and began making original pieces. Her fabric choices stem from her exploits to Paris, Rome, and Belgium. Sharufa’s design aesthetic ranges from vintage inspired pieces to modern tailored pieces. I am absolutely in love with their styling. Peep some pieces from Jinaki below check them out here

 Happy Tuesday dolls,
I have been officially instagramed if thats actually a word. Instagram is the best thing after sliced bread. I am so loving the pics I am taking with this app. My skin looks amazing in these pics if only it was the real deal.  I got this kente inspired fabric during my trip  to Mali a few months ago.  I bought enough fabric to make myself  a skirt and these shorts. As you can tell I cannot wait for the warm weather. The photos were taken by my little sister who was visiting from NYC. Anyways I wish all a happy and great week  and don't forget to follow me on instagram @ciaa. More pics below

MY VERY FIRST BLOG INTERVIEW NIGHTMARE

When I started blogging 3 years ago I was just a girl with her laptop trying to make a change on the way people see , feel and think about African fashion. There was barely any website that did what I did. I had no experience at all with regards of how to get what i wanted as a blogger.Today I am going to tell you a story about how I got my first interview for the blog with an African fashion label and what i learned from it. So here I am with this blog with almost no content trying to get an interview with a somehow well established label. So since I lived quite far from them I sent them an email to find out if its possible for them to respond to a few questions for me. They responded a few days later and advised that they could. I was pretty happy, so the questions were sent off and the waiting game started. I waited patiently for two weeks and did not hear back, so I sent another brief message to remind them of the questions once again they got back to saying that they are working on it. Third and fourth fifth ,sixth week came and went and no answer. my blood started boiling a bit and I sent an email back to them on the 8th week and said the following." Hello, I was just following up with you again to see if you were still interested in doing the interview I know you might be busy however I know if this was vogue contacting you I am sure you would have found the time to respond quicker " OUPS. I felt so bad about sending that email. After my email I got an answer 3 hours later with my answers and they specified that they were just busy nothing do to with being vogue or not. What did I learn from this?
