LOOKBOOK: CHICHIA LONDON AW13/14 - PROJECT GAUNI: THE DRESS CONCEPT

African fashion by tanzanian designer Chichia London

For Autumn Winter 2013, London based label Chichia explores the concept of communication through dress in their dress concept collection. As they offer the 13 key dresses every Chichia girl should have hanging in her closet, details such as multi ruffles, tiered dress bodices and skirts and manipulated style lines are featured throughout the collection in Chichia's signature playful contemporary and easy to wear silhouettes with a refreshingly vibrant colour palette.
Quirky details such as stained-glass window inspired patchwork khanga prints are inter-mixed with bead work, sequins, print, solid, and everything inbetween. Swahili khanga sayings are a re-ocurring feature throughout the collection, either as all over print or strategically placed as a homage to the beautiful language. Playfully mis-matched slithers of underskirts are left on show and placed with contrasting prints; juxtapositioned colour palettes break the rules as mismatching becomes the norm. The printed East African cotton khanga is featured as well as referenced and used alongside fabrics such as viscose, cotton and jerseys. Modern quiet luxury with a splash of whimsy, Who says winter has to be bland? Peep the rest of the collection below.....

IMANE AYISSI PRESENTS HIS SPRING/SUMMER 2012 COLLECTION IN PARIS {ARCHIVES}

 This Imane Ayassi collection was one of the best collection I have ever posted on ciaafrique. He is such an amazing designer. In case you missed it  a year and half ago you can check it out again.

           Originally posted on 7/12/11

Cameroun Designer  Imane Ayissi  recently  showcased his  summer 2012 collection in Paris. Born in Cameroon, Imane Ayissi arrived in France in 1990. This lover of fabrics has tailored for himself a strong reputation in the Afro-Caribbean community. In September 2002, he presented his eight collection Vogue Africa in the Daniel Buren Circus in Paris.Imane Ayissi draws his inspiration from the pre-colonial Black continent to create a global fashion which goes beyond the ethnic label. He works his fabrics in a soft and pure way in order to reveal harmony and magnify the elegance of women, elegance being the key-word of this creator. Chic, distinction and a touch of aristocracy are features of his dresses. Innate respect of women that reveals without undressing and suggests the body rather than shows it, is characteristic of this designer who resorts to some daring to help those he dresses with their seductive power.Entire collection after the jump.

This collection made me think about how rich and colorful African fashion was and to be honest it was one of the flyest collection at the time.

Congolese born, London based Womenswear designer Tina Lodondi just released her new Spring/summer collection. Tina designs are very classic and chic. The collection has everything from blazers, to dresses, skirts and shirts so we can all definitely find something we like. Honestly I am still having a hard time choosing my fave piece. I reached out to Tina to find out what was the inspiration behind this beautiful collection here is what she has to say:

"I wanted to create a look for the new generation of girls and women who wants to embrace the African prints. It is chic and feminine, with girls cuts. I observed what the girls wore in the Chelsea area of London and I thought they were missing some colours...I really wanted this collection to follow on the last one and to create a brand identity." LOOKBOOK: MODAHNIK FALL/WINTER 2012 COLLECTION

INSPIRATION

"The Modahnik Fall Winter 2012 Collection has a vintage feel to it. It's an ode to my late mother, who had the coolest style in the 70s and 80s during Congolese' fashion heyday. A time when Congolese musicians such as Papa Wemba dressed in an elegant fashion and initiated “Les Sapeurs” movement. I really wanted to experiment with the intersection of masculine elements presented in a feminine sophisticated way; Its all in the small details, the pleating, collars, sexy cut-outs and pockets that adorn the dresses, as seen in the Double collar dress and the Pleated Sleeve Coat Dress." Kahindo Mateene
