AUSTRIAN LACE – NIGERIAN FASHION

House of Bunor
On Saturday May 14th, 2011, the Lagos Expo, Eko Hotel Lagos was transformed with lace at the Austrian Lace Nigerian Fashion Event. The event was hosted by the Austrian Embroidery Association in collaboration with the Commercial Section of the Austrian Embassy. The evening was a celebration of the trade relationship between the Austrian Lace manufacturers and Nigeria; a relationship which has existed since the 1960’s and is still ongoing. As part of the measures to protect that trade relationship, the Austrian Embroidery Association led by their President, Mr Markus Riedmann emphasised the need for Austrian Lace customers to watch out for the hologram, a new device specially designed to help potential customers shop for authentic Austrian Lace.

An interesting mix of over 600 guests – ‘lace ladies’, celebrities and Lagos’s finest fashion cognoscenti, gathered to celebrate the seamless fusion of fashion, history and culture. Vintage African lace pieces in intricately woven and colour infused embroidered patterns were on display as part of the African Lace exhibition – collaboration between Vienna Museum of Ethnology and the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, Nigeria.

The selected designers for the project - Folake Folarin Coker of Tiffany Amber, Frank Osodi of House of Bunor, Godwin Mekwuye of Vivid Imagination and Ituen Basi for Ituen Basi all presented a collection deconstructing and representing the lace fabric into modern pieces that were simply a refreshing and mind blowing re-interpretation of Austrian Lace.
