Most recently, Mefie launched a higher end leather line. The leather range is designed to be integrated into a women’s everyday wardrobe while adding an afro-chic twist, commented the designer and owner, Samantha White. The new leather line is created using top-grain leathers and suede mixed with tie and dye and digital prints.

This range is perfect for the fashion-forward professional woman who wants a handbag that can take them from work to play and day to night while still inspired by the iconic prints popularized across the continent. The designer, Samantha, created the line after leaving her corporate role as Business Development Director of a Pharmaceutical Market Research firm. ‘As a working professional, I yearned for pieces that celebrated my heritage and individuality while being ‘work appropriate’ she commented. Hence, the Mefie leather line works to strike that balance—creating beautiful, durable, mixed print handbags.



The leather satchel is large enough to carry a laptop, while the smaller cross-body bag is suitable to carry a tablet along with all daily essentials and the clutch bag is designed for small items needed for a night out.

 Born and raised in Johannesburg, Henriette Botha studied Jewellery Design at the University of Johannesburg, followed by a postgrad in Fashion Design at Instituto Marangoni in Paris. Having worked at well known fashion house, Balmain Paris, as a collection coordinator for over 2 years, she finally decided in 2012 that it was time to come home and pursue her own dreams.   FURAHA which  means “happy” in Swahili is a socially-conscious East African brand created in 2010 to combine delight in TheirAfrican heritage with the joy of providing meaningful work for local artisans.They are best known for their “Kikapu”, a traditional hand-woven raffia palm basket adorned in vibrant African prints and hand-woven textiles. The raffia palm baskets are hand woven by rural women weavers from villages in Central Uganda. Because their weavers derive 100% of their income from production of the baskets, FURAHA started an initiative called “Weave Out Poverty” to promote the common traditional skill of basket weaving into a home-based industry. The ultimate goal of “Weave Out Poverty” is to provide income-generating opportunities, as well as reliable and sustainable employment for the weavers. FURAHA women entrepreneurs can go on to eventually create their own small businesses and secure loans that allow them to expand their workshops and weave a proud future.
